Hallowell, Maine

I got a Facebook note from my friend Cathi last night reminding us that we should go to Hallowell, since we are so close. We needed to pick up some groceries (we're totally out of OJ and blueberries), so late this afternoon, we headed in that direction. This old town along the river is quite picturesque with some really neat buildings --

And brick sidewalks --

We popped into one of the jewelry stores along River Street to look at some of Maine's tourmaline jewelry. The lady in the store was quite proud of their watermelon tourmaline -- pink with a green edge around it. The one necklace I liked was only $1800... But another set with a gorgeous chunk of Maine amethyst that I really liked was $8000! I guess should quit looking. I seem to have a knack for picking out the pricey stuff...

After walking up and down the street, we crossed over to Hattie's Chowdah House where we had some wonderfully tasty lobster stew. Hattie's is in an old bank building. They are using the big built-in safe as their cooler.

While we were at the Chowdah House, it started to pour. There was thunder and lightening and buckets of water! Fortunately, the worst of it passed over while we were eating and we were able to get back to the Toad without getting drenched. Our waiter had given us directions to a very nice supermarket a couple of miles away near the turnpike, so we restocked our larder before returning to the KOA Kampground.
