Today we are in Savannah. We've discovered that the easiest way to get a sense of a city is to take one of the tours. There's no fighting traffic or one-way streets and you get a pretty good sense of what there is to see. This time we took the "white trolley" which offered a ninety-minute tour.
Savannah is a planned city laid out around its many beautiful squares --
Each square has a park area and usually a monument or two. This is the Polish General Polanski who fought with Washington's army in the Revolutionary War --
We had a surprise visitor hop on the trolley. Forrest Gump with his box of chocolates came running up!
Savannah has more wrought iron then New Orleans -- some of it is breathtaking --
The huge Fire Bell that called citizens to help fight fire (they say if could be heard for twenty miles!) --
And lots of gorgeous buildings --
Including the gold leaf covered dome of the Cotton Exchange --
We caught a glimpse of one of the thirteen Tall Ships that were in the harbor for the weekend --
More beautiful wrought iron --
We had been in Savannah for a Rural Health Conference several years ago and had stayed at the Hyatt down on the riverfront. It was fun to see it again from a different perspective. We went back to Auntie Violet for a nap -- and several loads of laundry! We had planned to go back into Savannah for dinner, but Forry's tummy was a bit upset, so we stayed at home this evening.
