Day One -- Pittsburgh 2010 Mennonite USA Convention

Moderator Ed Diller (L) and Moderator-elect Dick Thomas called the Mennonite Church USA Executive Board to order this after noon --
And with that Pittsburgh 2011 started! The Board meeting was bittersweet as we said farewell to seven Board members who had served with me the past four years. It's amazing what good friends you can make with people who live all over the country that you only see in person three to four times per year. I guess working together on some pretty tough issues builds trust pretty fast. This Executive Board has to be one of the best boards I've ever worked with (and I've worked with a LOT!). There is a singular lack of egos along with some very bright, experienced people. I have one more four year term to serve.
The three year time difference from the West Coast caught up with me this evening during the opening Worship Service. Fortunately Shane Hipps was the speaker. He is very dynamic and thought provoking. Ted & Co. performed one of their great tongue-in-cheek skits. Worship music was led by a team from Calvary Community Church -- very contemporary.
Since I had a meeting with the Racial Healing Task Force after the Board meeting, there was not a chance to have dinner before the Opening Worship. When we got back to the Hampton Inn, we raided the vending machines, then watched the fireworks on TV.

  1. Yeah that 3 year time difference between the coasts does mess you up, but look at it this when you fly back you will be three years younger :)
