Back to Civilization? Wi-Fi at Least...

We are back in Mount Vernon! And we have an Internet connection again! And we can use our cell-phones without incurring Canada charges! We've been camping at Salt Lake County Park on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Since it's just across from British Columbia, we were picking up Canadian cell towers.

We had a very enjoyable four days camping with Daughter Mary Mae and her husband Scott and our Grandson Varick (12) and Grand daughter Claire (9). They pitched their tent just across the dirt road from where the RV spaces were. We had one VERY rainy day, but the rest of the time we did a great deal of exploring around the area. Scott says he kinda liked using the RV for cooking instead of a camp stove...

One day we took a trip up the Elwha River to see one of the two dams on the river that are scheduled to be removed during the next year or so to return the river to a free-flowing one. These are both fairly old dams that no longer produce appreciable amounts of power. The Elwha Valley is spectacular -- it is definitely rain forest and extremely lush and green.

These are some of the sword ferns that cover the hillsides --

Note the heavy curtains of moss on the trees in the background --

Forry and I walked down the roadside for a ways while the kids were checking out the dam --

We stopped in Port Angeles for dinner. The Lady Washington was in port. There were going to have a gathering of tall ships there over the Labor Day weekend.

It was too late in the evening when we were there to go aboard. But yesterday when we returned to take the ferry, MM and Scott went aboard with the kids and spent quite a bit of time with the volunteer crew.

I've sent my camera off to the Nikon factory to see if they can repair the cracked view-finder, so all of these pictures have been taken with my iPhone.
