You cannot realize how large an area Phoenix covers until you have to go from one side to the other. The Phoenix metropolitan area actually encompasses a batch of small towns. Like the I-5 corridor in Washington State, it's just a series of small and large communities that all run together. You cannot tell where one ends and another begins unless you happen to see a Welcome to ----- sign.
We wanted to go over to the town of Queen Creek which is on the other side of Phoenix from Fort McDowell. Forry figures it was about an hundred and twenty mile round trip. The Queen Creek Olive Mill is one of our favorite places. They have wonderful flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars as well as olives and wine. They also have all of the serving pieces that go with those sorts of food.
Besides the food products, the Olive Mill has a small restaurant that serves sandwiches, salads and pizzas along with wine and beer. Forry sat and enjoyed a Kiltlifter beer while I was shopping, then I ordered him a Reuben while I had a glorified BLT made with Spanish olive tapenade accompanied by a glass of sangria. We got some of their wonderful cupcakes to take home -- two lime ones, a blood orange and a lemon one.
It was a long trip, but well worth it!
