No Wind Today....

After yesterday's ugly winds, it was nice to be without them today. We got a pretty good rain last night -- enough that there was a puddle on the patio. But that didn't do anything to get rid of all the lovely dust  inside the RV. It was a lot cooler today after the storm had moved through. It didn't get much above the mid-seventies. Nice!

I had a note from a friend in Yuma about how much damage the wind had done at the RV park where they were staying. He had lost the roof off of his Arizona room and there were over fifteen Park Model who had roof damage.

Forry is doing a lot of thinking about how he is going to install the new toilet he bought at Camping World. He made another trip to Lowes this afternoon and thinks he now has everything he's going to need to get the job done. Tomorrow should tell the story.

I'm not sure what was going on in Seattle tonight, but that Mariners game was a disaster. Even though the Mariners came back with several home runs in the ninth inning, it was still a nasty loss.

WINDY!

The weather forecast has been predicting gusty winds for the last several days and today they arrived! It was relatively cool (74 degrees) but there were some pretty good gusts of wind most of the day --

The miniature rosebush Forry got me for Valentine's Day has been doing well. It's put on lots of new shoots and looked good. Yesterday when I watered it, it looked like something had nibbled on some of the new growth. This morning this is what it looked like!

I've not seen any rabbits in the RV park, but we've seen lots of them in the desert. I did not see any evidence they might have left behind, but something sure had a feast!

These delicate yellow flowers are in the cactus garden two neighbors down the street from us --

I saw this lovely plant in the parking lot when we went over to the nearby Lowes store this afternoon.

It's not in my wild flower books. I guess maybe I need a guide to nursery plants as well?!

TGIF! -- Really?

Once again, the week has wound itself around to Friday. Though for retired folks, it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference. In fact, many times we don't even know for sure what day of the week it is. The only day we really keep track of is Sunday.

I spent a good share of the day doing laundry. My little Splendide washer/dryer did a week's worth of clothes in three loads. Once again, Auntie Violet looks like a laundry. I only run the dryer for about twenty minutes, then hang the clothes up to finish drying. That way I don't usually have to iron anything.

Towards late afternoon we made a trip to Lowes to look for a slightly bigger pot to transplant the little miniature rose bush Forry gave me for my birthday into. We found a nice pottery pot and bought the smallest bag of potting soil we could find. It's still way more than we need...

We had a nice sunshiny day today, but it is still a bit on the chilly side. The Mariners played the Padres this afternoon for the first day of Cactus League play. Unfortunately, they didn't this first game -- I'm not sure that's a good omen or a bad one. Some of the sports writers seem to think it's like dress rehearsal for a play -- that a bad rehearsal means a great Opening Night. Let's hope they are right!

Another Busy Day

Today was eye exam day. We stopped at the bank on the way and deposited a check, then it was over to Group Health's Eye Clinic. Neither of us seem to being showing much if any change. We both have the very early beginnings of cataracts, but they've stayed the same for the last several years. For some reason the clinic was really running slow today. I think I sat in the dark while my eyes dilated for almost 45 minutes instead of the usual 15 or 20.

I did not get new glasses last year when Forry did and I am ready for a new set. My lenses were a bit scratched up before, then I really did a number on them when I took a tumble in Salem, Massachusetts this summer (I had stepped out of a darkened elevator in a parking garage into bright sunshine and didn't see the curb right outside...). Fortunately, the "bendable" frames that I have are still in good shape, so I just need to get the new lenses.

From the Eye Clinic we drove out to Lowes to get a new runner for Auntie Violet's entry as the one we have is breaking up on the back. Lowes is where we got the first one, but after roaming through several aisles and finally asking, we discovered they no longer carry rolls of runners. So we went over to Home Depot to see what they had. They have various remnants and lots of carpets, but no runners. We did find a small striped carpet that may work.

Then it was over to Safeway for groceries. I had a long list of odds and ends that I only needed one of, so a trip to Costco wasn't necessary. By the time we got out of the grocery and back to Ponderosa Falls, it was already seven o'clock. By the time I got supper ready, it was really late. We had some of the corn from Jeff and Barb's garden that was very, very good.

The Yellow Taxi

We have spent some fun hours in the Yellow Taxi named Sunny over the last couple of years. With the folding chaise chairs, the spare suitcases, my folding trike, case of oil, etc., there is no excess space in the Toad. In fact, it's been a long time since the back seats have even been folded up. Our friends Leslie and Bill, on the other hand, always seem to have room for us in their rig and we end up riding with them.

This morning we took the Yellow Taxi to the Village Inn nearby for a fabulous brunch. They have a special breakfast that is sort of like a Chinese Menu. They have four columns of food listed and you choose four items from the long lists for breakfast. Forry ended up with an omelet plus pork sausages plus a biscuit and gravy AND pancakes! I shouldn't talk as I had my 2 eggs over easy, bacon, french toast and cinnamon apples... Leslie and Bill did as well, though I think Bill had sausage instead of bacon.

Leslie had to work this afternoon, so Forry and Bill made a trip to Lowes while I stayed home and enjoyed the quiet. Leslie worked from 2 until 9, so I fixed some snacks late this afternoon for me and the guys, then Bill barbecued a marinated flank steak for supper when she got back to the campground (which is just adjacent to Adventureland Park.

Errands -- and More Errands

Today was a day for running errands. We were just going to make a quick run to the post office to mail a couple of things, then Forry wanted to see if he could find a new switch for the lamp on his side of the bed at a Lowes. Then he decided he needed to go to Napa Auto Parts and then we decided we needed to go to Harbor Freight. So our quick trip turned into a good part of the day!

Since we really don't know the Orlando area at all, we relied on what I had been able to find for addresses on the Internet and what the GPS unit told us. We were able to find a couple of places that were in the same vicinity, but I'm sure we probably drove a lot of extra miles to get to the rest. We have the GPS unit programmed to avoid toll roads, so we end up seeing a lot of nice country that we probably wouldn't get to see if we took the freeways.

We saw a couple of grapefruit and orange stands on our way out and promised ourselves we would stop on the way home. But, of course, we didn't see a single one while coming back!

We did get a nice Christmas package from Daughter Dawn that had some packages and lovely notes from the grandkids -- and new pictures of Grandson Micah and Granddaughter Kyra! We saved the packages for Christmas, but are enjoying the pictures and notes.

How many miles today?

I wish we had kept track! Stop at Rancho San Diego corner to go the bank to get cash, check. Over to Target for paper for programs, ribbon for the ribbon cutting, a game of Skip-bo requested by the crew, check. Hey, they have a Starbucks stand, get a latte for me and a mocha for Forry.

Then off to National City to Sid's Carpet Barn to get carpet samples for House #3. Manager who had provided carpet for House #1 not there, he's at the local radio station recording a commercial. Salesman standing by offers to help. He and office manager look for prior invoice to find amounts, price range, etc.; not under client's name; not under CRT or Community Reconstruction Team, whose name is on the credit card used; not under Mennonite Disaster Service! Forry finally suggests looking under MDS, sure enough, there it is! Find four samples of brown flecked carpet.

From there to Chula Vista to a Home Depot for paint -- 30 gallons of it! Laminate flooring, hmm, 8 boxes of Hickory for House #3, 32 boxes of Oak for House #2 (no carpets for that house!) check, oops, we need 13 more boxes. Tile for bathrooms and laundry rooms, check. Paint rollers, sleeves of paint roller covers, paint brushes, check. Ear plugs, shop rags, drywall screws, check. Time to check out. Let's see, that cart all goes to House #3; no, those two things go to #1; that cart gets charged to House #2; oops, wait a minute, all that stuff on that end gets charged to MDS. Nice young man comes to help load five gallon pails of paint and the flooring into pickup. Stop by the vendor outside the store and buy two Polish dogs, get sauerkraut for Forry's; order diet Coke; clerk starts to fill, machine starts sputtering. Clerk apologizes, says she doesn't have another bottle. Buy two glasses of iced tea.

Oh, oh, an email on my iPhone from the environmental water guy says to contact him ASAP -- call him, he says we need to go to El Cajon to get a more sensitive test kit for testing for chlorine -- that darn well still shows the stuff -- we can't get the nitrate test until it's clear. Drive to El Cajon. Let's see now, he said to look for two ugly brown buildings, find the one next to the courthouse, okay, now for a parking space. Oops, can't both go in -- we've already got a couple thousand dollars worth of stuff in the back of the pick-up. Better have Forry stay with it. Okay, there's the door; nope, says public around to the other side; find the side door. Said to stop at front desk, sign in, get VISITOR badge, find elevator, go to 6th floor. Man at desk says the man who emailed me and I called and he said he'd be here until four is gone... Other guy shows up, nice guy, says he knows all about it. Shows me pink water from well, says the pool kit they had us buy yesterday isn't sensitive enough. Gives me five tablets, I'm supposed to add one to a water sample to check water every day, and to tell client to leave hoses running. He'll be out to check again on Monday, but tells me to go over to check it first & call him if it's still pink.... Gives me sheet of paper about sterilizing the well, it says to pour 1 QUART of chlorox down well for every hundred feet of casing. Remember seeing two empty GALLON jugs of chlorox by well... Find elevator, go back downstairs, give VISITOR badge back; now where's that parking lot? Oh, yeah, I had to go around to the other side of the building.

Stop to get gas at Costco -- price is up three cents from two days ago.

Go to Lowe's for missing piece of railing for porch at House #3.

Go to El Cajon Home Depot for missing 13 boxes of oak laminate flooring. Forry stays with pick-up in parking lot. Find only ten boxes on display...! Load them on cart. Finally think to ask if they might have any more. Clerk checks computer, says they're supposed to have fifty boxes of oak; was I sure I looked? Other clerk goes to check. Finds more boxes three shelves up near ceiling. Calls another clerk to get a rolling ladder. Climbs up gets one box, brings it down. I tell him I need two more. Asks me if I'm sure, after all the boxes must weigh forty pounds. Tell him yes, I need two more -- forebear telling him I had already loaded ten boxes of the stuff. Check out -- easy, these only go to one client. Get Forry to bring pickup over to loading area, one clerk helps load while another watches.

Forry parks truck a bit away from the loading area and I watch the pickup and wait for him to go in to purchase PVC pipe he needs for another client. Call Sister Sherry, get caught up on her and the dogs. Check my email, reply to accountant about address to send our tax return to us for signature. Sort out my wallet and receipts. Forry comes back with lengths of PVC pipe and elbows. Ties down load. Temp on clock in shopping area says 82 degrees.

Realize it's already five PM. I won't be back at camp to de-brief the crews at 5:15. Call Construction Foreman, he offers to go ahead with meeting, we can confer later.

Pull into the camp at 6 PM just in time for supper. Sure wish I had kept track of the miles...
