After all of the flurry of getting everything back into Auntie Violet and the fighting the wind to get to Bloomfield yesterday, we were quite tired this morning. It's strange how things that used to be so easy are now so much harder. It can't because we are now in our seventies, could it?
We did spend some time with the vacuum and the duster. Somewhere, we have accumulated a great deal of red dust on the windows along the the driver's side of the coach. Everything else is dusty as well, but not with the red, red dust. We may have picked it up yesterday from the wind or?
We needed to pick up some milk, bread and orange juice, so planned a late afternoon trip to the grocery. The closest Safeway store is about seven miles away in the town of Aztec. That seven miles is full of natural gas stuff: drilling equipment, refineries, and various plants. It was a little after five and we met numerous rigs heading back to their various headquarters. Most of them are flying pennants -- so they can be seen in the field? as identification?
We found a drive-through car wash in Aztec and took Toad II though. It didn't do a super job, but she looks a whole lot better than she did before the dirt/rain shower in Mesa.
The Desert Rose RV Park flyer had an ad for a Chinese restaurant in Bloomfield named Panda Garden, so we decided to check it out. Bad move. Lots of very bland over-cooked food. It's the first really bad meal we've had in a long, long time.

Forry's Project
The new toilet we bought at Camping World has been sitting in the back of Toad II for a couple of weeks now, as Forry's thought about how he is going to install it. We wanted one of the newer taller toilets to replace the one that originally came with Auntie Violet.
The old one sat in the corner and was beginning to be somewhat the worse for wear. In this picture Forry has the bottom skirt off and is getting ready to remove it...
The new one is now "out of the box" and sitting upside down in the living room...
Forry got the old one removed without too much hassle...
Due to the width of the rear portion, the new one is put in parallel to the wall instead of at an angle --
It does look nice! And it works very nicely, thank you.
A good days work!

Monday Chores
One of the things I really like about Valle del Oro is that Mesa, Arizona really believes in recycling. Just about everything but food, styrofoam and food stained paper goes into their recycling bins. Each site gets one big recycling bin - twice the size of the garbage one - that is collected every two weeks. Today was collection day. We had to take our blue bin across to the other side of the street --
What a sight to see all of the blue bins lined up along the street ready for pick-up --
We went over to the Activity Office to arrange for newspaper delivery. While we were out, we decided we just had to deal with the very dusty, dirty Toad II. I checked on the GPS and found a car wash that was just a mile away from the park --
They had a very busy, very conscientious crew that really worked Toad II over --
Inside and out --
She was primped and polished. All of the rain and road grime disappeared --
Juni and Tom came over for a bit this evening. Juni said Toad II looked brand new!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
We've had a reprieve from the incessant moisture of the last week. Yesterday there was sunshine and Thanksgiving Day dawned clear as well. We had a late light breakfast and then headed up to Seven Feathers about 2 PM. We checked out the The Gathering Place Buffet, but the line was about an hour and a half long according to the hostess...Forry checked out the Cow Creek Restaurant (where we had the rib eye steaks a couple of evenings ago) and reported back that it was pretty full, but there was presently no line. We decided that rather than wait in line, we would go back to the restaurant. It turned out to be a VERY good choice. Their special turkey dinner was $9.99 per person and turned out to be way more than either of us could eat. They had an incredibly good butternut squash soup for an starter. Forry opted for the green salad instead, but after a couple of tastes of my cup of soup, he said he wished he's chosen it instead. Next we were served large plates with three thick slices of turkey breast and several pieces of dark meat; large scoops of both dressing and real mashed potatoes and gravy; haricot greet beans with bacon; whole berry cranberry sauce and yeast rolls. We had a choice of pecan or pumpkin pie with the meal, so we ordered one of each.
It was a busy place. I felt a bit sorry for our waitress who seemed a bit harried already when we were seated. She was waiting on quite a few tables, but almost everyone seemed to be ordering the special, so at least there were not a lot of confusing orders. About halfway through our meal, she lost a plateful of the special off her tray, just missing the man at the next table. Everyone kept their cool -- the man she almost hit was quite nice about it. It's tough to have to work on a holiday, but one of the staff told me they had volunteered because they were being paid time and a half. Our bill seemed to be awfully small for such great meals. I did leave a 50% tip...
One of the items I added to my thankful list was "not needing to work on holidays anymore." (Hospitals are open 24/7, so I've worked on many of them...)
Since we've taken the Seven Feathers shuttle every time we've gone anywhere, we haven't even unhooked Toad II. The lady driver is the same lady who guided us to our site when we arrived. It's been fun visiting with her about her years of working here. She says that times have been tougher since the economy has taken such a hit and they don't have near the perks they used to have. She was looking forward to a complimentary turkey dinner this evening however. Seems to be a good place to work. There's not a lot of turnover.
This is the last of the sunset we saw on our return via the shuttle to Auntie Violet --
I hope this Thanksgiving Day was a blessed one for all of you who read my ramblings! (One of the other items on MY Thankful List is all of you who have encouraged me in my writing!)

Okay, Back in Business!
We got a late check-out (noon) and just hung around the motel and watched TV or read all morning. They had a hot breakfast with both biscuits and gravy and made-to-order omelets, so that took up an hour or so. We did enjoy taking l-o-n-g hot showers. One of the downsides of RV living is the necessity to conserve water (mainly, to avoid having to empty the tanks too often), so we usually take GI showers. You know, you turn the water on and get wet; you turn the water off and soap up; you turn the water on and rinse off; you turn the water on and get your hair wet; you shut the water off and shampoo; and so it goes. Anyway, it was nice to just stand there and soak.
After we checked out, we headed over to I-5 Uhlmann's RV and hung out in their waiting room. They do have complimentary popcorn and drinks and a large TV, so it isn't too much of a hardship...
About three o'clock, Clayton finally said they were almost finished. There indeed, was a crack in the sealing around the rear vent that he re-sealed. He also installed the roller sun shade on the passenger side of the windshield; repaired the radiator shroud so that it can be opened and shut; replaced the missing exhaust pipe holder; lubricated the generator slide opener; and fabricated a new seal for the end of the tie rod on the steering arm. Well, I don't think Clayton did it all, but he saw that it got done...
By the time they finally, finally finished up and we hooked up Toad II and paid the bill, it was a good five pm. We wanted to at least get a couple of hours down the road, so headed south on I-5:
We drove until about 7:30, then pulled into an RV Park for the night.

On to Chehalis
It took us a while, but we finally got ourselves organized this morning and left Daughter Dawn's house on Whiskey Hill Road behind --
We pulled out of the driveway across the street into the parking lot on the side of 91 School (for some reason, they did NOT name the school after the road it is on, unlike most of the area schools...) in order to hook up Toad II --
It was a nice day for traveling as we headed north on Interstate 5 --
That white mass you can barely see through the trees in the middle of the picture is actually Mount Hood --
As we approached Portland, the scenery changed from trees to buildings --
There were several cranes signalling new construction along the Columbia River --
Portland, indeed, is the City of Bridges --
Another seventy-six miles and we made it to Chehalis and I-5 Uhlmann's RV. We had been talking to the fellows in the shop there and they were waiting for us. It doesn't sound like it's going to take too many hours to take care of Auntie Violet's complaints. Clayton had already started on the list by the time we left. He had backed Auntie Violet up to one of the 50 amp outlets on the shop building so that she could keep her freezer running --
We checked in at the nearby Great Western Motel to spend the night. From there we walked over to the Comstock Inn for supper and then came back to the motel to watch Grey's Anatomy before bed.

Finally! On the Road Again
It was a VERY busy day today! We moved the last of the stuff we wanted to leave behind into the storage unit and got it all locked up. We then moved the old Chevy van back in front of the doors.
We loaded my folding trike into the back of the Suzuki (it didn't fit on the carrier!) and tied Forry's folding bike in its case onto the carrier on the back of Toad II.
The two chaise lounges in their bags went into the back along with another chair, the doormat, etc.
We took down the wi-fi antenna and stored it. Then it was all of the usual getting ready stuff: putting the stays in front of the dishes; putting up the bars in the refrigerator; putting away anything that might be loose; pulling in the slides; raising the jacks; airing the one tire that always seems to be low (even though multiple tire shops can find nothing wrong with it!); picking up the jack pads; hitching up Toad II. And FINALLY, we are ready to leave --
It was later then we had planned, but we decided to go part of the way and then stop at a rest area for a few hours. Which is exactly what we have done. We are at the Rest Area that is part of Memaloose State Park on I-84 in Oregon. It's a pretty noisy spot, right by the freeway, but if he's tired enough, Forry can sleep anywhere...

Finally! Toad II is Towable!
It was a l-o-n-g day today. We didn't leave Camping World until 4 PM this afternoon. Putting on the tow bars and the auxiliary brake both turned out to be much more complicated than anticipated. Early this morning, the techs came looking for the rock guard. They needed to fit it on the tow bars to see if they had gotten the spacing right. Forry and I carried it into the shop (it had been on the back of Auntie Violet.).
The tech checked it all out and figured he had gotten the spacing right --
So he went ahead and started fastening it down --
Meanwhile on the far end of the rig, the other tech was working with the brake lights --
He had already taken all of the back lights apart...
FINALLY, it was all put back together --
It actually looks pretty good. I think Toad II matches the colors of Auntie Violet quite well. The rock guard still needs to be moved over to the bar in front of the car from its hanger on the back of the RV.
It had rained off and on all day and it was still drizzling when we were finally ready to go. I had been a bit nervous about the final bill as we had been in the shop almost a whole day longer than anticipated. But Camping World was very good about it -- they chalked up a good share of the shop time as "training time" and did not charge us for it.
We need to do a bit of shopping (we've been without transportation for two days) and have an appointment with the banker on Monday, so we decided to go back to Ponderosa Falls RV Park for a few days. With out K/M Resorts membership, there is no charge for camping, so that helps. We got settled in in time to for me to make some chicken rice soup and watch more of the National Finals Bull Riding from Las Vegas.

Toad II
This is the parking lot of Camping World where we stayed last night -- and tonight as well. You can see how wet it is here!
This little island has both 30 and 50 amp hook-ups --
This is the shop area behind the Camping World store. They have seven bays available and they are already looking for more technicians --
You can tell everything is VERY new. All of the tool chests are shiny and clean --
Early this afternoon we went to visit Toad II to see how things were going with the tow bar and brake installations --
Poor thing. She is minus her grill and headlights and is up on jacks...
They've got most of the interior portion of the tow bar set-up in place --
The technician was just starting to put in some of the many fastening bolts --
From what I understand, they will cut holes in the grill for those two bars sticking out...
Most of the wiring harness for the Air Force auxiliary brake was laid out on the floor awaiting its installation --
Forry made another visit to the shop a little after four. They had most of the bolts installed and and were starting to put things back together. It was pretty obvious they were not going to get it finished and checked out today. It's not too bad a place to be spending the night.

Off to Spokane Again
We got ourselves organized this morning, getting ready to head for Spokane -- hopefully for the last time this year! The tow bar package from RoadMaster that was back-ordered for the new Suzuki finally arrived at Camping World and we made an appointment to have it installed tomorrow morning.
Since we have no way to tow Toad II, I followed Auntie Violet. I really like driving the new rig. Maybe because I have had a chance to drive it so much lately...?
After I opened the gate for Forry, I parked across the road to watch him come through --
I shut the gate behind him, then watched him head up the hill, out of the coulee --
We stopped on the way and got some VERY expensive diesel -- $4.32 per gallon! And that's with the Flying J discount! We've seen it for around $4.16 in Spokane. Looks like we should have waited!
We came on out to the new Camping World in Liberty Lake. We had made arrangements with Larry, the service manager, to park overnight in their lot so that they can get started on the rig when they open at 8 AM. They are also going to install the Air Force brake system we got a couple of years ago at the Gypsy Rally. This is a new store with a new crew, so we'll see how it goes... We do have a 50 amp hook-up, so should be able to spend a comfortable night.
Since we will most likely be heading south once we are finished here (though we'll go back to the ranch to load up), we thought we'd take Son Sean out to dinner one more time before we left. He wanted Mexican food, so we went out to Casa de Oro, one of his favorites.
Now we're back at the Camping World parking lot, watching the first go-around of the National Finals Bull Riding from Las Vegas.

Getting Ready --
I spent most of the day today dealing with laundry. Folding and putting away what I washed yesterday and washing a few more. I got most everything I had taken to Sister Sherry's earlier in the week cleaned up and put away. I started organizing what we might need to take with us over to Mount Vernon tomorrow.
Seems like even though we are back at the ranch after our 11,000 miles driven during the last year, we are still doing a lot of running around. It's a great deal easier to travel with Auntie Violet as everything we need as far as clothes, etc. is with us. Since we are still awaiting the arrival of the new tow bar for the Suzuki, we either have to leave her behind or one of us (me) has to drive Toad II while the other drives the motor home. So what we've been doing is packing a suitcase and traveling without Auntie Violet. NOT fun!
At least the wind was fairly quiet today. I think the cold front or whatever weather system it was, came through last night. The thermometer showed that it had gotten down to 29.3 last night after several night without frost. I could look out and see frost on the tips of the sage brush this morning!

Journey to Touchet
This morning I packed my suitcase and my computer; loaded up assorted items I had picked up during the last year's travels; and fixed a bag with various groceries and headed for Touchet to spend a few days with my sister. As I drove down Highway 395, I realized that in all the years my sister had lived near Touchet, I had never driven there by myself!
I guess I have gotten rather lazy about driving. It is so easy to let Forry be my chauffeur. He likes to drive and it's not really my favorite thing to do, so it's just easy to let him drive. I'd much rather be checking in on Facebook or reading my Kindle or just watching the scenery as we go. It was actually a very pleasant drive. Toad II handles the road well and the Suzuki is very comfortable. I had bought some of Sherry Farmer's CDs last week, so I listened to them most of the way down.
One of the fun things about being at Sister Sherry's is cooking with her. My Brother Pat and his sons and his Brother-in-law Gary and his sons were going to be here for supper (deer hunting season starts tomorrow), so she had already made bread pudding and pumpkin bars. We ended up making hard sauce for the bread pudding and frosting for the bars. Then put a ham in the oven and made some scalloped potatoes (Patrick brought fresh potatoes from his garden).
It was fun to see the young men that Pat and Gary's sons have turned into. Nephew Nick went back to Walla Walla for the night (he'd already gotten his deer during the black-powder hunt.), but Nephew Jared and his cousins Matt and Mike are staying here along with their dads. They are planning to be out in the field by 6 AM, so they headed for bed quite early.
I had bought the largest collar they had at Margaritaville for my favorite mastiff Deacon, but it just barely fits. He is four years old now and though he's no taller, he's gotten much more massive through his chest and shoulders. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

Journey to Spokane
As we were getting ready to head for Spokane this morning to check in with the bank and to pick up the carrier bars for Toad II's roof, I got a call from the lady at Hallmark Suzuki saying that our license plates had come in. She was wondering where she should mail them and was quite pleased to hear that we were actually going to be in Spokane today.
We stopped at the Suzuki Parts Dept. to pick up the bars and discovered that the lady at the sales office had brought the plates over there as well, so it ended being a quick trip. From there we went to the bank with the paperwork I had gathered together for them. We evidently had everything they wanted, so that was a quick stop as well.
Next was a stop at Costco. Forry was out of cereal and we needed blueberries and calcium citrate tablets. It was too early in the day to have supper, so Forry didn't even get a Polish dog. We gassed the Suzuki and then instead of staying in town for several more hours then going out to dinner, we decided to just come on home.
We got back to the ranch and Auntie Violet in time to watch the Vice Presidential Debate. I must admit I can hardly wait for the election to be over -- it seems like the campaign and the ads have been going on for years!

Toad II Gets a Hitch
We had an appointment this morning at Hallmark Suzuki's Service Center to have the Tow Package installed on Toad II. It's a pretty sturdy and good-looking hitch.
Here's a picture of a fairly dusty Auntie Violet after last night's dust storm. After the hitch was installed this morning, the shop gave Toad II a bath, so it doesn't look too bad...
I snapped this close-up of the top of the slide over the living room, just to show the large numbers of pine needles stacked up on Auntie Violet's top. The ground at the RV Park is almost solid with them -- for a little while yesterday it almost looked like it was snowing pine needles!
We ran a few errands after we got Toad II back. I picked up a new pair of jeans and we stopped at the AT&T store and got a new iPhone charger for the car. Other than that, we didn't do much else before we headed back to Peaceful Pines. Forry spent part of the afternoon transferring some of the stuff we had stashed from the Liberty out to back of the new rig.
We're looking forward to watching the first Presidential Debate this evening...
